Problem Statement

The challenge was to design a user-friendly online space where students and visitors could engage with contemporary art from across Asia, highlighting various themes such as art activism, feminism, and environmental ecologies. The platform needed to provide an immersive experience that reflects the dynamic, ever-evolving nature of the contemporary art world while keeping the content organized and accessible.

Solutions

To create a visually dynamic and engaging web experience, I applied UI/UX strategies that focused on enhancing user interaction, ensuring seamless navigation, and emphasizing the vibrancy of contemporary art. Interactive features, such as mouse-hover effects and click-and-drag functionality, were incorporated to reflect the energy of contemporary art, encouraging users to actively explore the thematic categories in an immersive and intuitive way.

The design used a vibrant color palette and custom illustrations for each category, adding visual interest without overshadowing the artwork. Bold typography and graphic elements contributed to a modern, youthful tone while honoring the academic and cultural depth of the content. The site’s structure organized themes like art activism, feminism, and environmental ecologies, ensuring easy navigation through the rich media experience and making the content both engaging and accessible.

Optimized for all devices, the platform ensured a seamless, user-centered design across desktop, tablet, and mobile. With intuitive navigation and clear, engaging presentation, the design prioritized usability, providing a smooth browsing experience that encouraged exploration without overwhelming the user.

Final Notes and What’s Next?

Since its launch, the Re-shaping Worlds platform has continued to be updated with fresh student perspectives. In 2022 and 2023, RMIT University’s School of Art continued its partnership with Salty Fish Studio to keep the site vibrant and relevant. The platform is evolving to include new features, such as enhanced interactivity, to engage a wider audience and encourage even deeper connections with contemporary art. We look forward to continuing this collaboration and pushing the boundaries of web design to make the platform even more immersive and impactful.
